Our Professor for Science of Materials had us conduct a term long project pertaining to a topic we were learning in class. My group chose to explore properties of carbon fiber in an epoxy matrix. During this experiment, we investigated the performance of a carbon fiber composite under various loading conditions (bending and tensile). The purpose was to analyze the effects of various numbers of carbon fiber layers (4, 6, 8, and 10 layers) on the material’s tensile and flexural properties. The failure mechanism in each condition was also investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Attached below are some of the SEM images of various layers at failure sites along with some of our figures for data analysis.

4, 6, 8, and 10 layers’ failure points post tensile tests
- 8 Layers of Carbon Fiber: Bending Fracture
- 10 Layers of Carbon Fiber: Bending Fracture
- Bending: # of Layers vs. Modulus & Ultimate Tensile Stress (MATLAB)
- Bending: # of Layers vs. Deflection Strain & Force at Failure (MATLAB)
- Tensile: Tensile Properties of 4 Layers & 6 Layers (Excel)
- Tensile: Tensile Properties of 8 Layers & 10 Layers (Excel)
